World Disabled Day - 2018

 

World Disabled Day is observed every year on 3rd December and like every year Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People also celebrated it on 3rd December 2018. It is also known as International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the day aims to promote an awareness of disability issues and the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities. It is important to integrate disabled persons in the main stream of society, promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of politicalsocial, economic and cultural life.

 

This year on World Disabled Day, Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People organized and took out a rally where about 300 differently able students of the Special School for the Disabled participated along with their Parents, Special Teachers of the Special School and Staff. The procession started from our Institute at 44, Chanditala Branch Road, Behala, Kolkata – 700053, to Anandamela Sweets on Roy Bahadur Road and back to our Institute. On this occasion all the students wore ribbons on their wrist, some of the students were on wheel-chairs and all were holding placards, banner on message about World Disabled Day. The differently able students along with their teachers also tied ribbons on the wrists of people through the areas where the rally passed and explained to the importance of 3rd December “World Disabled Day” and why it is observed.

 

On this important day a program on organized on the 3rd floor auditorium of our Institute where the students participated in dance, music and fun. On this day Mr. Pradip Kumar Barui, Former Asst. Director, Directorate of Social Welfare Department, Govt. of West Bengal, spoke about World Disabled Day and interacted with the students. Our Founder Director, Dr. M. A. Hasan Sahani, also spoke on this occasion that a differently able person should also have should equal rights as others and strongly voiced his concern that all the recommendation of Disability Act 2016 should be implemented at the earliest. All Government Offices, Institution should be disabled friendly, have ramps, be barrier free and should be easily accessible to a differently able person. All the students were treated with tiffin and Lunch. The program ended with the Special Teachers thanking all present for making the programme a success.

 

We as a responsible NGO working in field of disability is doing our sincere bit in promoting and providing education, training and rehabilitation to the differently able and trying our best in bringing them to mainstream and make a difference. We believe the Government, general public needs to more pro-active and responsible towards the differently able and adopt, treat them as their own.
